L’Agenzia europea per i medicinali ha deciso di lanciare la revisione continua sulla base di dati di laboratorio, non clinici, e di studi clinici sugli adulti.
L’Agenzia europea per i medicinali (Ema) ha avviato la rolling review (revisione continua dei dati clinici) del vaccino anti-Covid Vidprevtyn, sviluppato da Sanofi Pasteur. Il 18 settembre 2020 la Commissione Europea aveva siglato un accordo di preacquisto con la casa farmaceutica francese e con la britannica GSK (il secondo contratto sottoscritto dall’esecutivo Ue, dopo quello con AstraZeneca) per acquistare fino a 300 milioni di dosi. La sperimentazione non aveva dato inizialmente risultati soddisfacenti e l’iter del vaccino franco-britannico si era fermato.
Ora il comitato dell’Ema per i farmaci destinati all’uso umano (Chmp) ha deciso di lanciare la revisione continua sulla base di dati di laboratorio, non clinici, e di studi clinici sugli adulti. Dati che suggeriscono come il vaccino stimoli la produzione di anticorpi contro il Sars-CoV-2, proteggere quindi dal coronavirus, almenmo presumibilmente. La rolling review, secondo l’Ema, “continuerà finché non saranno disponibili evidenze sufficienti” per chiedere l’autorizzazione condizionata alla commercializzazione nell’Unione Europea.
Il vaccino di Sanofi è basato su proteine: contiene una versione allevata in laboratorio della Spike, quella che consente al virus di penetrare nelle cellule umane, e anche un adiuvante, una sostanza che aiuta a rafforzare la risposta del sistema immunitario al vaccino. Quando una persona riceve il vaccino il suo sistema immunitario riconosce la proteina Spike come estranea e crea anticorpi contro di essa. Se più avanti la stessa persona entra in contatto con il Sars-CoV-2, il sistema immunitario riconosce la proteina Spike ed è quindi in grado di proteggere il vaccinato dal virus.
